Varieties of Christian Prayer and Posture

Text

Matt. 6:9-13 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Memory Verse

Matt. 6:5 And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

Introduction

How we pray matters, because prayer uses words that carry weight in the heavenly places. The early disciples saw this and asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1).

Effective prayer is not about using lots of words or spending long hours (Matt. 6:7). It is not about appearing nude, prostrating, or rolling on the floor either.

Real prayer flows from knowing Christ’s teaching and praying in line with His words. Godly living and compassion also matter. God does not hear prayer from people who ignore righteousness and mercy (John 9:31; Isa. 58:5-12).

Objective
To see the two main varieties of Christian prayer and the acceptable posture.

Presentation

1. Varieties of Christian Prayer

There are two main types: corporate prayer and individual prayer.

(1) Corporate Prayer
This is prayer done together as a group. It has two forms:

(i) Corporate Vocal
Everyone prays aloud together based on the points given by the leader. Example: Acts 4:23-31, where the whole group lifted their voices to God.

(ii) Candidate or Delegate Vocal
One person is appointed to lead while others agree with an “Amen.” Example: 1 Cor. 14:16-17.

Guidelines for corporate prayer:

  • Use a language that everyone understands, so that people can agree (1 Cor. 14:16-17).

  • Keep order and decency. God’s acceptance does not depend on how long you pray for or on how many words you use (Matt. 6:7-8).

  • Members should follow the appointed leader without interrupting or competing.

(2) Individual Prayer
This is prayer done alone. Unlike corporate prayer, there is no strict scriptural order for it -  except that it should be modest and done for God’s glory and your good (Col. 3:17).

You choose the place and length. Jesus often went alone to pray (Luke 6:12; Heb. 5:7). That freedom is for personal prayer.

2. Posture of Prayer in Scripture
Apart from not appearing nude, Scripture does not give one required posture. Prayer is a spiritual exercise (Eph. 5:18).

Posture can vary - standing, kneeling, sitting, hands raised, eyes closed - whatever helps focus. In corporate settings, follow what the leader directs and obey them (1 Thess. 5:12-13).

The Bible talks a lot about clothing in relation to worship and prayer:

  • 1 Tim. 2:9-10 tells women to dress modestly and with decency in worship.

  • Ex. 20:26 and Ex. 28:42-43 gave priests instructions to be covered when approaching the altar so that they would not “uncover nakedness”.

The consistent biblical pattern is modesty and reverence. The approach is one of respect, humility, and not treating holy things casually.

Conclusion
“Order is the first law of heaven.” I agree. That is why Scripture gives clear direction on how to order public worship (1 Cor. 14:26, 40).

The early disciples cared enough to ask Jesus to teach them how to pray well (Luke 11:1). We should care just as much.

Evaluation Questions & Answers

  1. What are the features of a collective or congregational prayer?

    • Everyone prays together, either aloud as a group or through one leader with others agreeing “Amen”.

    • It uses a language that everyone understands.

    • It follows order and decency, without competing or dragging on (Matt. 6:7-8; 1 Cor. 14:40).

  2. According to 1 Cor. 14:40, what two things should be observable during corporate worship?

    • Everything should be done decently and in order.

    • That means no chaos, confusion, or competition - just clear, edifying worship.

  3. In the candidate vocal type of corporate praying, what important element must be considered?

    • The congregation must understand what is being said so that they can agree with “Amen”.  If people do not understand, the prayer is not edifying (1 Cor. 14:16-17).

  4. What is the Scripturally acceptable prayer posture?

    • Scripture does not prescribe one posture. The key is reverence and order. Do not appear nude, but beyond that, posture depends on the context and the leader’s direction (1 Thess. 5:12-13). The heart matters more than the position.

Prayer

Father, thank You for teaching us how to pray. Give us wisdom to order our hearts and our assemblies so that our prayers honour You and build up others. Let us never pray for show, but always for truth. Amen.
